Schoolism Live San Francisco - 4/28/2013

This was about the time where school start to crank up for the final few weeks - and boy was I busy, but since I already signed up and paid for Schoolism Live I couldn't not go. I've been to several of these talks/workshops/conferences/etc. and 90% of the time I walk away unhappy because the information provided is usually very generic and often repeated (work hard, stay positive). Anthony Jones led this workshop and boy was I in for a treat. The presentation started off very generic as usual, but once he started doing demo's I was very impressed. Not only was he an amazing artist, he was able to communicate his thought process while working - and that was very valuable, because whenever I see/watch demo's I don't understand an artist's decisions. He allowed attendees to submit their artwork to be critiqued live on the spot. These critiques were great, because again not only could you hear his thought process - he would actually fix the pieces on the fly. Schoolism Live is definitely something I'll go back to when they come back to S.F.

Creature Design Week 10

This guy was really fun to do because I got use a bunch of different photoshop techniques that I don't use regularly.

Creature Design Week 8

Lots of fun, but I'm not sure about the design. This may be a good thing, because whenever I'm in doubt about my design my instructor loves it. And whenever I'm confident, my instructor thinks it's too safe/boring.

GDC 2013

GDC 2013... I'm glad I went and I'm glad it's over. If you are an aspiring artist trying to get into the video game industry I highly recommend going. If you are able to tough out the long lines for portfolio reviews and keep an open mind, you will get a sense of where you stand and what you need to do to get to where you want to go.

I went for three days, finished physically and mentally drained, met a bunch of people, allowed my schoolwork to suffer a bit, and now I'm happy that I'm inspired to get back to the grind of the student life.

Visual Element of Story

Here is a good amount of work done in my Visual Element of Story class from last semester (Fall 2012). We spent the whole semester developing characters and environments from a given list of stories. I chose Red Riding Hood, but set in a modern city.

Here is Red Riding Hood with thumbnails, turnaround and facial expression studies:

Here is a night time establishing shot with some thumbnails and color studies:

Here is a day time establishing shot with some thumbnails, day/evening light studies, color studies, and the original pencil sketch:
