Consumed
The whole zombie/apocalypse genre is exploding and I'm loving it. When The Last of Us was released this summer, it was the 1st game in a long time that I was hooked into story and gameplay wise. I was inspired to do artwork set in a zombie/apocalyptic setting. It's a little cliche, but here's my main character of my story. Final design/rendering (top), value/color studies (middle), thumbnails (bottom).
Above are value studies from my story - while there are zombies in my setting I wanted to focus on human interaction (yes, more cliche-ness). These will make more sense when I upload the drawings of my other characters. More to come soon...
My Summer internship at GSN
One regret I had when I was an undergrad was not looking for any internships. Since returning to school full time I knew I wasn't going to make that mistake again. To my surprise I found a paid art internship, where the director promised me that I wouldn't be doing intern stuff like getting coffee, and that I would actually get to create art for games! Need not say anymore... I'm in!
I got to work on a bunch of different games, Outlaw Video Poker, Wheel of Fortune Slots, Boardwalk Slots, and an unnamed upcoming slots game. I got to do background concepts, environment paintings, and spot illustrations, but the doors (pictured above) was the 1st thing I did at GSN and my 1st piece of art that has gotten into a videogame.
Academy of Art Spring Show 2013
To my surprise I got 5 pieces accepted into the spring show (my favorite piece pictured). I was happy, excited, honored to be in this show with many truly talented artists. Those two weeks were very chaotic, mounting pieces for the show + working on final projects + mounting final projects = everything else got ignored (including this blog).
Creature Design Week 12 + 14
Week 12: I really liked the design and flow of this bird, but will admit bird anatomy and rendering a bird are extremely difficult.
Week 14: The Dragonfly was my final creature design for the class. I was told to stay away from typical dragon designs especially with the wings. This was very difficult for me because the coolest looking wings were always the most cliché (bat wings, etc). I tried to think of something different and decided to go with wings similar to insect wings. I really love the color and look of this creature, but am still unsure about the wings.
